New Authority Parenting Workshop

Event Recap

On May 8th, from 5:30 pm to 8 pm, Smart D8 teamed up with Tusla – The Child and Family Agency – to host the ‘New Authority Parenting’ workshop in iD8 at The Digital Depot. This event marked the first mental health workshop facilitated by Tusla professionals Heather McLoughlin (CFSN Coordinator) and Lorraine Doherty (Senior CFSN Coordinator) in honour of Mental Health Awareness Month.

Workshop Highlights

By the end of the workshop, which aimed to address child-to-parent violence, participants had a solid understanding of Non Violent Resistance principles and practical techniques.

Child-to-parent violence includes a spectrum of abusive behaviours such as aggression, intimidation, physical violence, controlling tactics, stalking, and financial abuse. In these situations, the child uses violence or the threat of it to disempower the parent, seeking to control or dominate family members.

The Seven Pillars of Non Violent Resistance (NVR)

Participants learned about the seven pillars of NVR:

  1. De-escalation
  2. Baskets
  3. Reconciliation Gestures
  4. Active Resistance
  5. Supporters and Self-Care
  6. Announcements
  7. Sit-Ins

De-escalation is key to breaking the cycle of conflict. Parents were taught to “press pause,” meaning to control their response without giving in. For instance, calmly stating that the issue will be addressed later when both parties are calm is a strategic withdrawal, not a sign of surrender.

The Role of Regulation in Parenting

Dr. Bruce Perry, a renowned neuroscientist in trauma, emphasizes a three-step process for helping vulnerable children:

  1. Regulate: Help the child calm their fight/flight/freeze responses.
  2. Relate: Connect with the child through an attuned and sensitive relationship.
  3. Reason: Support the child in reflecting, learning, and becoming self-assured.

Establishing Respectful Communication

Parents were encouraged to calmly insist on respectful communication. This strategy helps establish a positive parental presence and fosters a new, healthier relationship dynamic. These actions are not punitive but show commitment to positive interaction.

Breaking Negative Interaction Habits

Over time, families can develop negative interaction habits. In homes with child-to-parent violence, parents might feel restricted by their children. Breaking these habits empowers parents, enhancing their sense of self and reducing feelings of being used.

Building a Support Network

Recognizing or building a support network is crucial. Supporters, who can be family, friends, or trusted individuals, offer practical help in ending violence and aggression at home. They act as witnesses, mediators, or protectors and support the parent’s authority without undermining it.

Acts of Reconciliation

Reconciliation gestures help rebuild the loving parent-child relationship strained by challenging behaviours. These acts of love run parallel to non violent resistance, fostering increased cooperation over time without depending on improved behaviour.

Workshop Goals

The journey through Non Violent Resistance often involves “two steps forward, one step back”. This slow, uneven progress keeps moving in the right direction, maintaining hope through setbacks.

The ultimate aim of the workshop was to help parents and caregivers reflect on their own contributions to aggressive and violent behaviour. By developing de-escalation skills, they learned how to bring about positive and safe changes in the home, creating a more harmonious family environment.

Knitting Classes

Crafting Connections Through Knitting Classes

The two main objectives of the knitting classes, delivered by SICCDA/RECDP and supported by Smart D8, were to equip participants with essential knitting skills and to stimulate mental and physical wellbeing, particularly for older adults. These classes, held on April 8th and 15th, 2024, aimed to promote positive aging and overall health through the therapeutic art of knitting.

Stitching Lives Together

Led by a confident and experienced knitting tutor, the classes provided a nurturing environment for participants to explore their creativity and enhance their knitting abilities.

Thirteen enthusiastic individuals participated in the workshops, receiving hands-on instruction and guidance to develop their knitting skills. At SICCDA/RECDP, many older participants already had a passion for knitting, forming their own knitting group to collaborate on projects. During the workshops, each participant received two balls of wool to use, with a special focus on creating blankets for donation to a worthy cause. In fact, over the two-week period, participants knitted 15 blankets that were donated to hospice care, showcasing both their newfound skills and their compassionate spirit.

Beyond the practical skill acquisition, the knitting classes reinforced a sense of community and mutual support among participants. Through shared learning experiences, individuals supported and encouraged one another, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere where everyone felt valued and empowered.

Conclusion

A total of 13 people participated in the knitting classes over the course of two weeks, which provided participants with valuable skills while promoting a deeper sense of connection and support within the community. By knitting together, individuals found joy in creativity, comfort in companionship, and fulfillment in giving back to others. This project exemplifies the power of creativity and community in promoting positive aging and wellbeing.

Cooking On A Budget Classes

Empowering Individuals With Cooking Skills

In an effort to foster healthier lifestyles and stronger community bonds in Dublin 8, Robert Emmet CDP/SICCDA, with support from Smart D8, delivered the “Cooking On A Budget” programme from January until March in South Earl Street in Dublin 8. The primary aim was to equip residents, particularly older individuals and those with limited incomes, with essential cooking skills and nutritional knowledge to promote overall wellbeing.

The classes welcomed families of all ages from both SICCDA/RECDP groups and the wider community. Through a series of eight-week classes, participants engaged in hands-on activities aimed at enhancing meal planning, cooking techniques, and nutrition understanding.

Interactive and Collaborative Sessions

Each class, held for two hours weekly, delved into various aspects of budget-friendly cooking. Before diving into cooking demonstrations, participants engaged in discussions on optimizing food budgets and minimizing waste. Practical examples of affordable recipes were showcased, empowering participants to replicate them at home.

The project fostered a collaborative learning environment where participants actively contributed meal ideas and worked together on budget planning. Interactive discussions encouraged peer learning, while hands-on cooking activities provided practical experience in meal preparation.

Delicious and Cost-Effective Meals

Under the guidance of an instructor, participants prepared two nutritious family meals within each session, all under forty-five minutes and with a maximum weekly cost of €20. Leftover ingredients were creatively repurposed for the following week’s recipes.

Conclusion

Due to space constraints, each week’s class accommodated a maximum of eight participants and, upon completion of the classes, they all reported increased confidence in meal planning and preparation within their budget constraints. Furthermore, they reported reduced stress and improved overall well-being, highlighting the positive impact of the project on community members’ lives.

By providing practical skills, knowledge, and support, this programme promoted healthier food choices, improved dietary habits, and fostered community togetherness.

Around the city, there are services working successfully with many parents, using the Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) programme. This programme is designed to bring the violence and aggression to an end and to build a better and stronger relationship between parents and their children.

Virtual Reality Workshop

VR Workshop With The Digital Hub’s D8 Surfers Club

On Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024, Smart D8 supported The Digital Hub in the delivery of a Virtual Reality Workshop with the D8 Surfers Club in the Learning Studio at the Digital Depot from 10 am until 12 pm.

This workshop was lead by the tutor Barry Haughey, who is a digital artist, XR coah, STEAM educator and the founder of HoloGen.

The D8 Surfers Club

The D8 Surfers Club holds a special place at The Digital Hub, having nurtured digital literacy and connectivity among local residents since its inception in 2015. What began as a tutor-led class, where local residents with limited exposure to communication tools and the internet, has evolved into a vibrant community hub where members gather weekly to share knowledge, experiences and camaraderie, while discovering how digital technologies can benefit them in their everyday lives.

Unlocking the Potential of Virtual Reality: A Gateway to Ageing Well

In today’s fast-paced world, technology continues to revolutionize every aspect of our lives. One innovation that is gaining increasing attention is Virtual Reality (VR). Beyond its entertainment value, VR holds immense potential to enhance the quality of life.

Even though VR is often associated with the younger generation, its benefits for older adults are equally profound. In fact, one of the key advantages lies in its ability to combat social isolation. As individuals age, factors such as mobility limitations or the loss of loved ones can lead to feelings of loneliness and detachment. However, VR offers a lifeline by providing opportunities for social interaction and connection. Through virtual meetups and collaborative activities, older adults can forge new friendships and reignite their sense of belonging.

VR serves as a powerful tool for cognitive stimulation because, by immersing themselves in interactive VR experiences, older adults can sharpen their cognitive skills, enhance their memory, and maintain mental acuity. Furthermore, VR holds promise in promoting physical wellbeing among older individuals thanks to virtual fitness programs and interactive games. Participants can then engage in low-impact exercises that improve balance, flexibility, and coordination.

VR Workshop with the D8 Surfers Club

The workshop aimed to onboard everyone in getting set up and started with VR experiences given the fact that for many members of the club this was their fist time using a VR headset. The tutor taught participants the basics and made sure that the equipment was comfortable for each user.

The topics covered during the workshop were:

  • What is VR technology and what are its key features and capabilities?;
  • How do you use the equipment comfortably and safely?;
  • The importance of taking a break;
  • Visiting different parts of the world with Google Earth in VR;
  • Stepping inside a museum;
  • Playing an immersive game.

Through engaging demonstrations and hands-on activities, attendees had the opportunity to explore a variety of immersive experiences firsthand, gaining valuable insights into this cutting-edge technology.

By embracing VR technology, the D8 Surfers Club broke free from the constraints of age and experienced a newfound sense of vitality and exploration.

Change For Life Programme

Introduction

Since 2013, The Change For Life is a wellbeing programme that has enabled people across the city to improve their health and wellbeing. The programme adopts a holistic approach to improving health and wellbeing, encouraging participants to look after their mental and physical health while providing important social outlets for many people in our communities.

This year, this 8-week initiative took place from January until March 2024, and was delivered in different areas of the city, mostly in Dublin 8: Fatima, Dolphin House, Rialto, Bluebell, and Inchicore. The programme offered a comprehensive regimen of fitness activities and health education.

Partnerships and Support

The Change For Life Programme is the result of a dynamic partnership between Fatima Groups United (Family Resource Centre) and Dublin City Council Sports Partnership.

This year, the programme was also supported by Smart D8, HSE Health and Wellbeing, and CDETB. This collaborative effort ensured a holistic approach to health promotion and community development.

Objectives and Focus Areas

The primary objectives of the programme were to foster holistic wellbeing, promote healthy lifestyle choices, and encourage community engagement. By targeting areas such as physical health, mental health, and emotional resilience, the programme aimed to empower participants to make sustainable changes in their lives. People were encouraged to think about health and fitness in a broad sense.

To involve the participants in all the elements of the programme, a variety of activities were offered:

  • Health assessment and weight management advice;
  • Nutrition and cooking classes to promote awareness regarding healthy food and eating;
  • Exercise classes such as yoga, circuit training, tai-chi, reflexology, pickleball, aerobics, pilates, aqua, dancing, and zumba.

Participant Diversity and Engagement

This year, 249 individuals aged 2 – 90, took part in the programme!

The initiative catered to individuals of all backgrounds and abilities. From underactive adults to minority groups and homeless individuals, Change For Life embraced inclusivity and diversity. Sessions were tailored to accommodate varying needs, ensuring equal access to health-promoting activities.

Programme Highlights

Over the course of the 8-week programme, participants engaged in a range of activities including:

  • Pre-assessments (height, weight, BMI, measurements, blood pressure);
  • More than 40 weekly exercise classes to avail of;
  • One to one advice session and support;
  • Re-assessments at the end of the programme;
  • Celebration and graduation open to all participants and supporters.

Impact and Results

Pre-assessments revealed prevalent issues such as obesity and high blood pressure among participants. However, post-assessments showed significant improvements, including reductions in BMI, weight loss, and better blood pressure management.

Youth Involvement and Education

In addition to adult-focused activities, the programme included sessions tailored for children in crèches, preschools, and after-school programs. Through interactive sessions and engaging activities, children learned fundamental movement skills and developed a greater appreciation for physical activity.

Graduation and Community Celebration

The culmination of the programme was marked by a celebratory event where participants were recognized for their achievements and could then look forward with a healthier perspective on the year ahead. Awards were presented to individuals who demonstrated commitment, progress, and community involvement. The event served as a testament to the power of collective effort and community support in achieving wellness goals.

Conclusion

The Change For Life Programme exemplifies the transformative impact of community-led initiatives in promoting health and wellbeing. By fostering collaboration and inclusivity, Fatima Groups United and its partners have provided residents with the tools and support needed to embark on a journey towards healthier living. As the classes continue all year round beyond their initial timeframe, their legacy of resilience and empowerment will endure, inspiring positive change for years to come.

The format encouraged active participation and collaboration, starting with a brief presentation on Smart D8 followed by an open discussion using the Jamboard.

Fifteen students from Psychology and Social Studies Courses attended the workshop and were divided into four groups. Each group addressed four key questions:
